Mission
To help advance Seattle’s transition from an extractive linear economy to a more regenerative, global circular economy with zero waste, thriving industries, and healthy communities.
About
In collaboration with Circular by Design and with seed funding from the Port of Seattle, Seattle Good Business Network is working to shape the Seattle Materials Marketplace: a platform to advance Seattle’s circular economy. The online virtual marketplace brings local companies together to find innovative ways to connect and use the waste from one, as raw materials for another. Our positive financial, social, and environmental impacts are informed by design-led strategies that directly address the needs of our business community and diverse partnerships.
The Materials Marketplace will enable businesses and other public and private entities along the supply chain to reduce resource costs, usage, and waste production by providing a platform to facilitate the exchange of materials (via sale, giving, or trade).
Get Involved!
This work is currently being supported by a dedicated steering committee of 11+ industry stakeholders and public and private partners who help inform and contribute to our strategy and processes of the development and scaling the Seattle Materials Marketplace. This platform is inspired by our collective vision for a global circular economy with zero waste, thriving industries, and healthy communities.
For businesses looking to use the virtual marketplace:
Are you a business or individual looking to sell, buy, give, or exchange reusable materials to divert them from landfill or recycling? Are you interested in supporting or being involved with the Seattle Materials Marketplace in another way? Joine the marketplace and/or fill out the survey below!

Updates
Last Updated: 10/29/2020
Our beta platform is currently in its early growth stages as we work to onboard and iterate the key functionality of the platform to maximize its efficiency and utility for businesses. As we work with current pilot users, we hope to gain insight that will allow us to scale the marketplace to serve the broader region and industries within.
Previous Updates:
Seattle Good Business Network has collected initial material data and information from local businesses, manufacturers, and partners to inform how the Marketplace will connect businesses, suppliers, and consumers of reusable materials. We will continue to collect this data throughout the development and utilization of the Materials Marketplace. We are currently at the drawing board for the first iteration of this marketplace to serve local businesses and start diverting waste and promoting the reuse of materials!
Background
With tools and insight from our dedicated steering committee, existing Materials Marketplaces (e.g., Austin Materials Marketplace) across the country and a network of over 600 local urban manufacturers and producers, Seattle Good Business Network is uniquely positioned to learn and adopt best practices to create a marketplace that is responsive to Seattle’s needs.
Marketplace Objectives
The Materials Marketplace will:
- Educate businesses, consumers, practitioners, and the broader community of the value proposition of reuse and zero waste
- Divert materials from entering landfill and create new market opportunities
- Reduce cost of resources for businesses via diverted materials
- Quantify transactions between material source and end-market use
- Quantify materials in-demand and in-excess from participating stakeholders, e.g., amount of vinyl or wood, etc.
- Build businesses and community stakeholder relationships
