What is Seattle Good Mentorship?

Seattle Good Mentorship is a pilot program and online platform (in tandem with Green Job Pathways) where youth interns will develop relationships and connect to resource sharing opportunities with a cohort of ten “green” mentors. Mentors will host professional development sessions on a variety of topics related to their areas of expertise and engage in 1:1 mentorship asynchronously as desired by mentorship participants.

Mentors are professionals enthusiastic about cultivating and helping train youth entering the green jobs workforce. Mentors should come from multi-disciplinary backgrounds related to the green sectors and/or sustainability efforts more broadly.

Seattle Good Mentorship is a program of Seattle Good Business Network, and is funded by Seattle’s Office of Economic Development.

Applications are now closed for the 2023 cycle. Check back later for updates on the next cycle of interns and hosts!

For 2023 participants:

  • Final workplanning will take place in May and early June
  • Onboarding will take place in mid-June
  • Mentor program begins: Wednesday, July 5, 2023
  • All hours must be completed by: Friday, September 8th 2023

FOR MENTEES

Youth will be required to provide a W9 or a W9 substitute form. Unfortunately, this does mean that youth need a SSN or EIN number to participate in the program – therefore, we don’t recommend any DACA recipients without work authorization or undocumented youth apply to our internship opportunities. Youth can register to volunteer with us generally here: https://seattlegood.org/volunteer/

Because this program is funded by King County, we prioritize applicants who are within county limits. However, this doesn’t mean other applicants are not eligible! I would recommend if any youth feels they can reasonably commute to King County and meet the program’s occasional in-person requirements, they should apply and be sure to answer:

Citi(es) Where You Reside at least 50% Of the Time: [ ex. I live in Everett but work in Seattle ]

We use a living wage model, which accounts for the minimum employment earnings necessary to meet a family’s basic needs while also maintaining self-sufficiency in King County. Right now, that is …

  • For youth: $22.14/hr
  • For hosts: $2,000 stipend
  • For mentors: $1000 stipend

This is a hybrid mentorship opportunity. Some interns will be placed at businesses with brick-and-mortar locations in the Greater Seattle area, while others will work remotely to engage virtual businesses emerging through limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In person components will involve: on-site visits with Cascadia Consulting Group; time spent at relevant businesses’ brick and mortar locations; and engagement events.

Seattle Good Mentorship is a community mentorship model and online platform where our youth interns will begin to develop relationships and connect to resource sharing opportunities with a cohort of approximately 10 professionals, some of which are peers.

Mentors should come from multi-disciplinary backgrounds related to the green sectors or sustainability efforts more broadly. We additionally prioritize mentors who come from underserved or BIPOC and low-income backgrounds so that mentees can feel like they are represented in their career paths.

Smaller businesses don’t currently have capacity to take on circular and otherwise sustainable business practices on top of managing their business workflows. Even moreso, businesses that want to take on circular and otherwise sustainable business practices still need time, money, and education to do so effectively.

In partnership with Green Job Pathways to train youth in this vital assessment work, The EnviroStars program (funded by Seattle Public Utilities) is a one-stop shop for Washington businesses to access environmental assistance and gain recognition for being green. This includes access to a database of your green business peers!

Businesses who register with EnviroStars during internship will, in addition to assessments and digital storytelling for their business, receive:

  • 1:1 consulting assistance to explore and leverage the entirety of the EnviroStars program – at your own pace, within your own capacity.
  • Ready-to-use tools and tactics to plan your long-term strategy for saving money and minimizing your impact on the environment.
